Christmas Cards
In the weeks coming up to Christmas Post Offices in
the United Kingdom handle millions of Christmas cards.
These are greetings cards with a design which celebrates
Christmas. Their designs can range from scenes relating to
the Nativity to pictures of seasonal weather or amusing pictures
of Santa Claus. Lots of cards now are sold in aid of charities,
raising money for needy people or other good causes.
But how did it all start? In 1843 John Horsley made the first
Christmas cards. He had been asked to make these by Sir Henry
Cole who was too busy to write to his friends over the Christmas
season. These were printed in black and white and then coloured
by hand. The custom of sending cards grew in Victorian times with
the arrival of the new 'Penny Post' postal service.
Nowadays people often include a letter in the card updating their
friends with news of what they have been doing.
