Be eco-friendly with Roots & Shoots

Posted on 08-Jun-18

It's vital we do more to save planet Earth, and the issue of single-use plastic is a hot topic. Topmarks is loving the education programme at Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots site, helping to raise environmental awareness.

Roots & Shoots is a programme set up by the Jane Goodall Institute in the UK, guided by Jane's founding principles and vision. A renowned primatologist, environmentalist and humanitarian, Jane's belief is to inspire, educate and drive hope in young people so they can make a real difference.

The Roots & Shoots scheme is really flexible and fun, so anyone – kids, teens, teachers, parents and club leaders – can come together to inspire young people in making a positive environmental change. It's what the world needs! Read about how Roots & Shoots works here.

There are ideas galore for projects, many of which can be easily customised to suit different age groups. Plus, we found many are curriculum-linked, so can easily fit into your teaching plans. Find lots of downloadable resources including teacher notes on the site, as well as updates from other groups about their projects, all sure to jump-start your imagination.

Taking care of the world around us is so important, and the 'Mission Possible' of learning about how to reduce, reuse and recycle is an perfect place to start. Single-use plastic is something we should all be avoiding so why not devise a project on how you can affect a real, and positive difference in your school and its local community? Check out the activities here.

Three ideas Topmarks really love are:

  • Avoid using plastic bags, by designing and decorating your own fabric totes to take shopping instead
  • Have a litter pick in your local area, making charts on the types of waste collected, and discuss the impact of rubbish on plants, animals and humans, both near and far, including our oceans
  • Organise a school-wide campaign getting children to write letters asking local suppliers to cut down on plastic use, making sure everyone uses the recycling bins around the building, and more besides!

Make sure your school or group is registered at Roots & Shoots today, and join in the fun. Plus, enter details of how your project is making a local difference to your local environment and community. All of the writeups will be considered for a Roots & Shoots Award, which include prizes and the chance for you and your pupils to meet Dr Jane Goodall herself.

All resources on the site are free, but Roots & Shoots is a charitable enterprise, so donations to keep it running that way are gratefully received.
